When Kisho Kurokawa opened the Nakagin Capsule Tower in 1972, he saw it as the future of city life. The residential and office building consists of two towers, composed of 140 prefabricated residential modules measuring 2.3 m × 3.8 m × 2.1 m. The towers are designed for the use in the city of Nakagin Capsule. In the 70s, the house was regarded as the future version of living in the 21st century. Kurokawa wanted to answer the central demands of metabolism. The residential units suspended in the core were to be flexibly connectable and serve as a construction principle for entire cities. However, this hope was not fulfilled. Today the tower is a relic and architectural icon. Visits are only possible via detours, such as booking one of the airbnbs still available in the tower.
